Nah. Its not too bad. The boards will fold to an extent without creasing. I even did my '98 without taking the front seats out which I was told was "impossible". I wouldn't put it on my list of "easy" or "fun" things to do on a Panther, but its not as bad as it seems.
2006 Audi A6: 129k miles, stock.
1998 Grand Marquis LS HPP: 98k miles, slowly becoming less stock.
1997 Lincoln Town Car Cartier: 148k miles, not stock, rusting into pieces.
1996 Grand Marquis GS: 117k miles, not stock. *RIP 7/14/12* :(

Re: Headliner questions

Tom stayed almost until we were about to leave today, so I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get it done today, but he left while I was changing so it was game on.

First story, then pictures, then more story, then more pictures, then maybe more story if I feel like it.

I pulled in a little bit before 2:00 and started disassembling the interior. Ran the ground under the back seat and taped up the wires. My parents got there with the black headliner a few minutes before I got done un-car-ing the inside. My mom helped me get the old one out, then I cleaned the roof in the appropriate spot and affixed the bracket for the overhead console. Left that bolted in place while we put the headliner in. Installed the pushpins and grab handles with their help and then they left. Then I started having trouble, of course. The visors gave me a bear of a time lining up, and I had to use the longer screw that came from the B-pillar trim on the one near the middle because the shorter ones wouldn't reach through the bracket. Then the console itself fought me; since the fabric wasn't tamped down, it wouldn't grab the clips. I got it screwed up in place, it'll eventually come around. Then I fought with the A-pillar trim, eventually punted on that and put the tan ones back in there - it's not permanent. I had it all back together by about 4:00.

It did not go all so smoothly, though. Upon testing operation of everything, I found that the compass is tits up, the visor lights are inoperable on the right and flicker on the left, and one of the back lights has a bad connection. I also misplaced the upper seat belt hardware in black, so tan went back up there for now. Compass is one of four wires, and I find it highly unlikely that it'd be the illumination wire; hopefully the ground I ran under the seat isn't making contact - that would certainly be the easiest thing - either that or I pinned the connector wrong. I have to check for power and ground at the visors, but the left one seems to be a dirty contact - good luck getting at that, right. The back light I can clean, not a big deal at all.

I compared (and contrasted) the Lincoln A-pillars to the Mercury ones and found my problem - they're not really as similar as I'd thought.

Then the little evil wheels started turning in my head.

I have enough fabric. I can cover these. I WILL cover these. I think I have a disease.

Not perfect - yet.

Damn, Mr. BlueJay, that headliner looks GOOD!

Actually, it looks BETTER than mine around the console... (I replaced my OEM short console with a 2003 long version, like yours.) On mine, the console doesn't mount flush to the headliner, and there's a little bit of light escaping through the gap around the edge. I might try to make it tighter, someday...

Here's mine... you can see the gap between the OHC and the (OEM) headliner:

I'm interested to see how well the paint wears on your overhead grab handles; and the fabric covered A-pillars is genius. DO EET!

I will make all this happen - (looks into mirror) because I'm smart enough, I'm psychotic enough, and doggone it people like me.
All better.

Tried to put the black pieces that I got out of the '02 in but they're shaped differently. Adhesive came today, I'll be pulling them back out and covering them tomorrow.

That was me being stupid. I put the BK/PK wire for reverse sense that I cut and ran down the a-pillar in pin 3 and the VT/OG wire for power in pin 7 and that was, of course, wrong.

They stopped flickering, which makes me suspect that it was just dirty, and on the passenger side I either installed the LED bulbs backwards when I put them in last year, or I wired the plug backwards - either way, they work now.

I turned it a few times and it stopped flickering. Still a little stiff, but I don't think it's gonna get any better.

I finally located the black upper seat belt mounts I had misplaced, and I still haven't taken the lint roller to those visors. It's been too damn cold. Maybe tomorrow.

The main problem is the lint roller's in the kitchen and it's too cold to fiddle with the car anywhere but at work. I did fiddle with the compass again today, but not the seat belts.

bluejay, you have WAY more patience than I do. I would have given up on that project a long time ago. :yabro:
